Almost since the day 2012-13 Flawless Basketball released and became an immediate sell-out last season, inquiring minds both inside and outside of Panini America HQ have been pondering the same thought: How can the bar possibly be raised for next year. Well, next year has arrived, and Panini America officials today began providing a few answers, including one featuring “The Answer” himself.

In a move that will no doubt make waves throughout the global basketball card community, Panini America officials have secured new autograph deals with several marquee names who’ve been glaringly absent from certified-autograph checklists for years, including Allen Iverson,Carmelo Anthony,Dwyane Wade,Manu Ginobili,Oscar Robertson and Chris Webber. These on-card autographs will benefit more than just 2013-14 Flawless Basketball, however; many will also be featured in 2013-14 National Treasures Basketball and 2013-14 Immaculate Basketball, too.

To be sure, the magnitude of this news deserves a closer look . . .

• Webber’s on-card autographs will be featured only in 2013-14 Flawless Basketball and represent the popular star’s first confirmed certified autographs since the 1999-2000 season.
• Iverson and Wade will appear in National Treasures, Immaculate and Flawless on their first-ever on-card autographs for Panini America.
• Anthony’s appearances in all three products represent his first on-card autographs since the 2010-11 season.
• Ginobili, making his Panini America autograph debut, will appear in all three products on his first autograph cards since the 2007-08 season.
• Robertson’s on-card autographs will appear only in Flawless and Immaculate and represent the legends first certified autographs since 2012-13 Absolute Basketball.

Panini America Offers Detailed First Look at 2013-14 Flawless Basketball (Gallery)



While an international basketball collecting audience counts down these final white-knuckle days until Wednesday’s celebrated release of 2013-14 National Treasures Basketball, NT release week also means we’re that much closer to the launch of Panini America’s final two ballyhooed releases of the 2013-14 NBA collecting season: 2013-14 Immaculate Basketball and 2013-14 Flawless Basketball. We brought you a detailed early examination of Immaculate in late July. Today, we’re exploring the preliminary details surrounding Flawless.

Flawless, of course, made a meteoric splash on the collecting scene last season with its metal-briefcase packaging and the otherworldly contents inside, which included diamond-embedded base cards and some of the most staggering sales ever recorded on modern-era trading cards. For 2013-14, Panini America aims to do the unthinkable: Raise the bar on the highest of high-end products. How exactly can that be possible? Keep reading to find out.


One way to raise the bar is to acquire on-card autographs from selected NBA superstars who haven’t signed on-card autographs for Panini America products in a long time — or ever. You know, transcendent players such as Allen Iverson, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Manu Ginobili and more.

Another is to add even more precious gems (diamonds, emeralds and rubies), slab them and insert two of them into every 10-card briefcase. Oh, and the other eight cards in that briefcase will be comprised of six autographs and two jumbo prime memorabilia cards. And no card in the product will be numbered to more than 25.
Panini America officials have also added new inserts such as Retired Numbers Autographs and Top of the Class autograph memorabilia cards.

You can bet that we’ll have plenty more on 2013-14 Flawless Basketball right here on The Knight’s Lance between now and when the product releases on September 17. Crown Jewels: Panini America Explores the Many Gems of 2013-14 Flawless Basketball



Of the myriad lessons we learned last year from the debut release of Flawless Basketball, perhaps none was more poignant than this: Diamonds, as it turns out, are not just a girl’s best friend. They’re a pretty big hit with high-end basketball collectors, too. Even now, almost a year after the groundbreaking release of 2012-13 Flawless Basketball, diamond-embedded base cards from that inaugural release remain in serious demand. And that bodes extremely well for the upcoming release of 2013-14 Flawless Basketball.

No one will argue with the fact that the premiere Flawless release left some gigantic shoes to fill for the follow-up. For the last 11 months, the Panini America Basketball Product Development Team has been diligently preparing a sequel designed not just to to meet those heightened expectations, but to exceed them. And that’s why you’ll notice more precious gems in 2013-14 Flawless Basketball (diamonds and emeralds have been joined by rubies and sapphires). Another development? The incorporation of even larger diamonds in the set’s 1/1 parallels. When you’re talking about diamonds, size absolutely matters — and bigger is better.


Base diamond cards are numbered to 20, rubies are numbered to 15, sapphires are numbered to 10 and emeralds are numbered to five. The 1/1 diamond masterpieces speak for themselves. In the stunning preview gallery that follows, we showcase a sparkling ensemble of 2013-14 Flawless Basketball’s jewel-embedded gems for your weekend viewing pleasure. We still have plenty to showcase before Flawless releases, but we figured this dazzling sneak peek would be enough to keep folks buzzing for a while.

Panini America Eyes the Jumbo Juiciness of 2013-14 Flawless Basketball (Gallery)



During these final furious stages of Panini America’s 2013-14 NBA product season, all eyes have settled on one product and one product only: 2013-14 Flawless Basketball. At this very moment, members of the Panini America Basketball Product Development Team are hard at work at the production facility across town giving 2013-14 Flawless Basketball the white-glove, hand-packout treatment (literally, they’re wearing white gloves).

I got the immensely enjoyable opportunity to venture over to the production facility earlier this week to document some of the proceedings and came back with enough buzz-worthy images to help collectors pass the time until the product’s October 1 release date. For today’s Flawless Friday update, we’re going to focus on some of the filthy, multicolored jumbo memorabilia showcased in the product.


We’ll follow up in the coming days with extended looks at the product’s precious-gem (diamond, emeralds, rubies and sapphires) and on-card autograph content. Today, though, is all about the memorabilia majesty. Enjoy.

Panini America Presents the Many Signature Moments of 2013-14 Flawless Basketball



Earlier today, several white-gloved members of the Panini America NBA Product Development Team hand-packed the final few black briefcases of 2013-14 Flawless Basketball, bringing official closure to the packout process. As a result, one week from today, high-end collectors across the country will begin unpacking the myriad fruits of Flawless.

Over the last several days, we’ve brought you several scene-stealing images from 2013-14 Flawless Basketball, including sneak peeks at the jumbo memorabilia cards and precious gems included in this year’s installment. Today, though, we’re focusing our preview efforts on some of the top on-card autographs featured in the product, including Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Carmelo Anthony, Shaquille O’Neal, Allen Iverson, Bill Russell and the first Chris Webber autographs in a decade.
